University Background

Established in 1898, Northeastern University is a private university in Boston, MA. Northeastern is right by the Orange line and Green Line. The campus is located in the Back Bay, South End, Roxbury, and Fenway neighborhoods, right next to Huntington Avenue. In the vicinity are the Museum of Fine Arts and Symphony Hall and the area is home to some of the finest music and art in the world.

Student Life

Northeastern has various residential halls. Some can house over 1000 students in the building, while some can house under 75 students. The dormitories are divided into villages, East Village and West Village. East Village is the most recently built dormitory, and houses students in the Honors Program. West Village is divided into eight separate buildings.

Northeastern has the oldest indoor ice hockey arena in the world. Formerly known as the Boston Arena, Matthews Arena opened in 1910 and is home to Northeastern’s hockey teams, basketball teams, as well as Wentworth Institute of Technology’s men’s hockey team.

The main recreation center at Northeastern is the Marino recreation Center. The first floor has various food vendors, while thåe second floor holds the fitness center for students, faculty, and others.

 

The main library on campus is the Snell Library, which opened in 1990.

 

The most popular majors for undergraduate students include marketing, engineering, business, health professions, and biology. Northeastern offers its students a co-op program, where students are able to work for different employers around the area and globe. Most students graduate within five years. The student-faculty ratio is 14:1, and the gender distribution is 52% female, 48% male.

The university has over 14,000 students. Some of the most popular choices for students to live off campus include Fenway, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, Back Bay, and South End. Popular streets include Huntington Avenue, Beacon Street, and Commonwealth Avenue. Students have the choice to live in a studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, three bedroom, four bedroom, or more depending on their roommate situation and preferences.
